Ralph Rice Invitational @ Western

With the Panther boys handily winning the meet, the results of Friday night’s 12-team Ralph Rice Invitational show a much more hotly-contended competition. Western scored 179 points to Olivet’s 98, Charlotte’s 95, and Marshall’s 92.
“We’re still looking to fine tune a few things,” Western head coach Lucas Sponsler said, “but for late April we’re making great progress. With a meet like this, it’s great to see our young guys have the kind of break-through moments that can be like rocket fuel for competitive confidence.”
Western’s throwers led the way, with Brennan Faber, Noah Shaw and Ron London taking first, second and fourth in the shot put, respectively. In the discus, Shaw, AJ Scutt and Faber swept first, second and third, also in that order.
Josh Veneziano continued his win streak in the high jump, while Edison Lopeman ran the 3200m in a blistering fast 9:42.94, beating the second-place runner by 17 seconds. Also winning their event was Western’s 4x200m relay team of Evan Craddock, Michael Brant, Jackson Jones and Mitchell Williams. Caleb Rudd-Jones placed second in the long jump, and Cooper Singleton finished second in the 1600m and third in the 800m.
“The final score really highlights how important depth is in this sport,” Sponsler said. “We had guys score points for us by finishing in the top eight in every single event. That kind of balance will help, come championship season.”
Western’s next meet is at home on Tuesday, when they open the Interstate-8 season by hosting the Marshall Redhawks.
