Results from yesterday in a variety of high school sports.
Golf
On Wednesday, October 9th, the Lady Jackets set forth on a mission to qualify for the state finals, at a difficult and treacherous Heritage Glen golf course in Paw Paw Mi. Concord knew the cards were stacked against them, as two of the top teams in the state were in the same regional meet, leaving only one spot available for the Jackets and the rest of the field. The day started with a one hour frost delay allowing more time for the anxiety, and pressure of the moment to build. At 11 o’clock the girls left for their starting holes to begin the journey they have been trying to complete for three years. As in golf, some holes were played well with pars and bogeys, while others were something different. After 9 holes of golf, Concord and two other teams were within 2 strokes of each other. As play started to wind down and there were less and less holes to play, the competition was still close. However, the mighty Jackets did not waver. Some clutch shots, like a chip in by Hannah Stimer, a beautifully struck iron to a par 3 landing 15 feet from the pin, leading to par by Haley Stimer. A wonderful par on an impossible par 5 by Grace Thorrez and a couple of clutch bogeys to finish her round by Pyper Norris.
The Lady Jackets were victorious over the schools vying for the coveted third and last position to qualify as a team for the State Finals.
Congratulations girls, you should be extremely proud of yourselves.
Hannah Stimer finished in a tie for 4th place overall shooting 90.
Grace Thorrez finished 9th carding a 98.
Pyper Norris shot 123 good enough for 29th and
Haley Stimer was 33rd with a 129.
October 18 and 19 the girls will be playing in the State Finals at Forest Akers West in Lansing MI.
Tennis
The Columbia Central boys tennis team had a great day of tennis today at the Regional Tournament with the majority of the players winning matches. The boys played some of the best tennis they have played all year against some of the best players in the state. Columbia did not advance to the State Tournament but ended its season with a great day of tennis.
Cross Country
On Tuesday, October 8th, Columbia hosted the Addison Panthers for a friendly home meet to celebrate the senior athletes of both teams. The evening started with senior signs and ended with pizza for everyone.
Seniors celebrated included Jack Gorton, Owen Lambarth, Joel David, Jacob Jordan, Katelyn Cielen and Melyssa McJennett. The two teams appreciate the time and dedication the seniors have given to the Golden Eagle cross country program. We hope that the skills and lessons learned with the team serves you well in your lives post-high school and most importantly, you enjoyed your time with us. We’ll miss you.
The Golden Eagles compete next at the Cascades Conference Championship at Ella Sharp Park on Wednesday, October 16th.
