Columbia 3 vs. Michigan Center 0
The Columbia Central Girl’s Soccer team improved to 6-1-1 on the season bouncing back from a tough 1-0 defeat at Manchester on Monday with a solid performance and 3-0 win at home over Michigan Center on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles started strong and never relented, controlling much of the play early and building a two-goal lead by halftime. Scoring first for Columbia was sophomore Mara Henry with an assist to senior Briar Rose. Junior Kennedy Salter would then stretch the lead with a nice goal assisted by Henry.
In the second half it was all Columbia once again as Kennedy would find the back of the net after receiving a nice pass from senior captain Allie Choate. The Golden Eagles had a chance to extend the lead to four late in the game on a penalty kick but senior goalkeeper Abbie Hess made a sensational diving save on the attempt to keep the score at three to nil.
“Abbie’s save was one of the best I’ve seen. Penalty kicks are a major challenge for a goalkeeper, but she guessed correctly and laid out to make the save. She’s one of the top keepers in the area.” Said Columbia coach Andy Hosmer of the opposing goaltender.
Of his own team, Hosmer added “Tonight was a fairly complete performance from the ladies. We have had three straight tough games against the strongest teams in the conference and in the previous two we played well but didn’t get the result we wanted. The girls were hungry for a win but moreso to prove they belong up here at the top of the list and they proved it tonight. I was proud of them and pleased with how they played. Everyone got in and got a chance to prove themselves and they did and that’s exciting.”
